The average UK tradesperson has a quote conversion rate of around 30–40%. That means more than half the time you spend measuring up, writing a quote, and following up doesn't turn into paid work. Some of that is unavoidable — people get three quotes and go with the cheapest. But a lot of it is fixable. Here's what actually moves the needle.
The single biggest thing you can do to win more quotes is follow up. Most tradespeople send a quote and then wait, sometimes indefinitely. The customer has received three quotes, is busy with work and life, and the path of least resistance is to do nothing. A follow-up call or message two to three days after sending the quote gives the customer a reason to decide.
Price matters, but customers are not usually choosing the cheapest quote — they're choosing the tradesperson they trust most to do a good job and not cause problems. Think about what builds that trust:
A customer reading your quote should understand immediately what they're getting and what happens next. A few things that help:
Customers request multiple quotes. The first detailed quote they receive sets the expectation for everything that follows. If your quote arrives first, they mentally benchmark the others against yours. If your quote arrives last, they've often already made up their mind. Get quotes out within 24–48 hours of the site visit wherever possible.
If you can't do a full quote within 48 hours, send a holding message with a rough range: 'Based on today's visit, I'd estimate this will come in between £X and £Y — I'll have a detailed breakdown to you by Thursday.' It shows professionalism and keeps you in the running.
Sometimes customers tell you the job went to someone cheaper. Before you discount, ask a simple question: 'Was it purely price, or was there something else?' Often you'll find the other quote included something differently, or excluded something yours included. Understanding why you lose quotes is the only way to improve your conversion rate over time.
