Most builders get their work from word of mouth — and most of them are inconsistent about it. The tradespeople who have a steady pipeline aren't necessarily better at the work; they're just more deliberate about staying visible to the people who could hire them. Here's what works in practice.
The majority of domestic building work in the UK is won through referrals. The problem is that most tradespeople leave referrals to chance — they do a good job and hope the customer tells someone. The better approach is to ask directly and make it easy. After completing a job, send a simple message: 'Really glad you're happy with how it turned out. If you know anyone who needs similar work done, I'd really appreciate the mention. Here's my number to pass on.' That's it. Most satisfied customers will happily refer you if asked — they just don't think to do it unprompted.
A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is free and puts you on Google Maps and in local search results. When someone searches 'builder in [your town]', profiles with reviews appear prominently. Setting one up takes 20 minutes. The key things to do once it's set up: add photos of finished jobs (this alone increases enquiries significantly), ask every satisfied customer to leave a Google review, and keep your phone number and website current. You don't need a website to have a Google Business Profile — though having one helps.
People who have hired you before are your best source of repeat work and referrals. Most tradespeople never contact previous customers unless they're called. A simple system: once a year, message customers you worked for in the last three years. Something like 'Hope everything has been good since we finished the work — just wanted to check in and let you know I'm taking on jobs again if you need anything.' This generates work from people who were planning to call but hadn't got round to it, and it keeps you top of mind for referrals.
Before-and-after photos are the most persuasive marketing a tradesperson can produce — and almost nobody takes them consistently. Start taking photos on every job: before you start, during key stages, and finished. Even phone photos are fine. Post them on a Facebook business page, an Instagram account, or just collect them to send to enquiries. A customer comparing two quotes will choose the builder who can show them ten finished kitchens over the one who can't show them anything.
The builders with the most consistent work aren't the best marketers — they're just reliable and easy to deal with. Responding to enquiries quickly, showing up when you say you will, and following up on quotes you've sent wins more work than any marketing tactic.
